Disclaimer

The Conflict Research Map is an informational tool intended to provide an overview of organizations that are publicly visible in the field of peace and conflict research. The map does not evaluate institutions, their activities, or their political positions. Descriptions and categorizations are based primarily on publicly available information and the institutions’ own self-descriptions.

The inclusion of an institution on the map does not imply collaboration, partnership, endorsement, or participation in the KonKoop network or in the project maintaining the map. Accordingly, the map is designed as a knowledge resource and reference for the landscape of peace and conflict research in Eastern Europe. Maintaining information on these institutions, including from Russia and Belarus, is important for documenting the development of peace and conflict research in the region. The map is a living document and will be extended in the future. Moreover, German and EU regulations restrict collaboration with Russian state-funded institutions. The institutions listed from Russia and Belarus are therefore included for informational purposes only, and their presence on the map should not be interpreted as an indication of active or potential cooperation, neither as a statement on the value of their work. However, users of the Conflict Research Map should be provided with information on research about conflicts and peace also in countries that wage or support war, for example, if they want to explore the research-policy nexus or the scholarly framing of conflicts in such countries.

Additionally, it should also be noted that some organizations associated with this project, including the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS) and the German Association for East European Studies (DGO), are currently designated by Russian authorities as “undesirable” or “extremist” organizations.

Legend

While the language of the map is English, the content reflects the local language(s) used by the respective organizations.

Marker Types

  • Applied Icon Applied – Organizations with a strong practice- or application-oriented focus (e.g. NGOs, field offices, activism).
  • Mixed Icon Mixed – Organizations combining academic and applied approaches (e.g. university-affiliated NGOs, think tanks).
  • Academic Icon Academic – Research-focused institutions such as universities, research centers or academic networks.

Cluster Behavior

Multiple markers located close together are grouped into circular clusters to improve map clarity. The number in each circle indicates how many organizations are in that area. The appearance of each cluster changes dynamically based on the number of organizations it contains:

  • Small Clusters (1-8 organizations): These clusters have a smaller radius (18px), indicating a low density of markers.
  • Medium Clusters (9-13 organizations): These clusters have a medium radius (22px), indicating a moderate density of markers.
  • Larger Clusters (14-18 organizations): These clusters have a larger radius (26px), indicating a higher concentration of organizations.
  • Large Clusters (19 or more organizations): These clusters have the largest radius (30px), representing very high density and many organizations in close proximity.

Clusters automatically dissolve as you zoom in, revealing the individual markers.

Filtering

The map includes filter buttons to narrow down results based on organizational type or activity. When filters are applied, the map updates dynamically to only show relevant markers.

Note: This legend will be updated with final visual styles and refined content before publication.
